Westbrook Forest FAQ

Scope of Work: This project involves the construction of a three-story, 12-unit condominium building in Fairfax. The building will have four (4) two-bedroom units and eight (8) four-bedroom units.

Timetable:  Construction will run from January-December 2007.

Location: The site is located at 11328 Westbrook Mill Lane, Fairfax, VA  22030, at the intersection of Waples Mill Road and Lee Highway.

Parking:  There are two designated parking areas for the site: on the adjacent property at Stevenson Street and Lee Highway, and two blocks north in the shopping center at Stevenson Street and Government Center Parkway.  Signs will indicate areas for Habitat parking.  Out of courtesy to neighborhood residents, please do not park on Stevenson Street.

Schedule:  We work on most Wednesdays and Saturdays, excluding major holidays. The workday begins at 8:30 and we start cleaning up no later than 3:30 pm.  Please plan to work all day and arrive by 8:30AM for training. Volunteers who miss the 8:30AM training may not be able to perform the construction task of the day.

Individual volunteers do not need to pre-register, but should call (703) 521-9890 ext 123 to learn if there is space available for individual volunteers on a given workday.  The recorded message is updated by 5:00 every Tuesday and Friday.

Groups: Large group spaces (5-15 people) are currently being reserved for project sponsors.  Small groups (3-5 people) can work on site any workday without having to pre-register.

House sponsors are given priority scheduling, as well as the ability to set up multiple workdays, commensurate with their sponsorship level.  For more information on house sponsorship, please contact Lisa Boccia, Development Director, at (703) 521-9890 ext. 103 or via email at lboccia@habitatnova.org.

Lunch is on-site at 12:00 pm and is supplied by the groups on site. We ask that any groups provide enough lunch for their team plus 10 extra people, and have it set up on-site by 11:45.  Use the site address above for deliveries.  Please notify the Volunteer Coordinator if this is not possible for your group.

Cancellations:  While we make every effort to keep our regular volunteer schedule, factors such as weather and the presence of subcontractors on site determine our ability to work on a given day.  To confirm that we are working on a given Wednesday or Saturday, call (703) 521.9890 x123 on Tuesday or Friday for an update on any cancellations.

No previous building experience is required to participate on site.  All that is required is willingness to work and willingness to learn. All necessary tools, safety equipment, and supervision are provided on the work site.  Volunteers are responsible for any of their own tools and personal possessions they choose to bring.  Children under 16 are not permitted on the site due to insurance restrictions.  Wear clothing appropriate for the weather, including sturdy boots or closed-in shoes and work gloves.  Sandals are not permitted on the worksite.
